Claudius Hildebrand serves clients at the intersection of strategy and leadership, helping executives translate enterprise strategy into actionable value creation plans. A trusted leadership adviser, coach and co-author of the book The Life Cycle of a CEO, he advises CEOs and boards across Fortune 500, mid-cap and privately held companies to strengthen succession planning and maximize leadership effectiveness.
Dedicated student of leadership and expert adviser on CEO success
Claudius’s work is grounded in a simple premise: Much of what we assume about CEO leadership is a myth — and that the best leaders deserve better.
- What makes his counsel distinctive is the evidence behind it. Drawing on an unprecedented study of every 21st century CEO of the S&P 500, Claudius identified the CEO Life Cycle — a five-stage pattern of performance that determines how leaders succeed or stumble across tenures. The framework transforms how boards evaluate their CEOs, and how CEOs understand their own trajectory.
- He co-authored the findings in The Life Cycle of a CEO, which was praised by the Wall Street Journal as "essential reading for anyone who leads or aspires to lead,” and named a Bloomberg Best Book. The book also earned Claudius recognition in the Thinkers50 Radar list 2026. Claudius also hosts a learning series in which he explores how the demands of leadership evolve across tenure with world-class chief executives and scholars.
- A regular contributor to Harvard Business Review, Claudius writes extensively on CEO performance, transitions and succession. His work is frequently cited in the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Forbes and the Financial Times.
Prior to Spencer Stuart, Claudius was part of Boston Consulting Group's CEO Advisory and founded early-stage businesses across Germany, China and the UK. He holds a Ph.D. and M.Phil. in management from Columbia Business School, a coaching certificate from the NeuroLeadership Institute and is fluent in German, English and Mandarin. Claudius is the proud parent of three budding artists and explorers.
