Based in New York, Joel von Ranson leads Spencer Stuart's global functional practices including the Financial Officer, Human Resources, Technology, Marketing/Sales Officer, Supply Chain and Legal, Compliance & Government Affairs practices. An expert on governance, he works extensively with boards, recruiting directors and leading board advisory engagements. He is a member of the firm’s global practice leadership team.

Joel has led more than 300 chief financial officer assignments for a broad range of technology/media, healthcare, consumer, and manufacturing companies. In addition, he helps CFOs build their top teams and plan for succession. Joel previously led the Financial Officer Practice in North America.

A breadth of finance experience

  • He joined Spencer Stuart in 2000 after working in senior roles at Time Warner and Condé Nast. During that time, he served as business manager and finance executive at The New Yorker magazine.
  • He has co-authored several articles on finance topics, including “Perspectives of Leading Audit Committee Chairs.” He is also a frequent speaker on topics including financial experts in the boardroom, CFO trends, career planning and succession.

Joel earned a Master of Business Administration in finance from the Stern School of Business at New York University and a bachelor’s degree with honors from George Washington University. He serves on the board of directors of Manhattan Theatre Club and is a former member of the Museum of Modern Art’s Contemporary Arts Council. Joel is executive sponsor of Spencer Stuart’s LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group.
