Managing Diversity: Attaining competitive advantage through diversity

Lutz Tilker

Managing Diversity: Attaining competitive advantage through diversity analyses diversity at executive level in European companies where executives, are for the most part, male, white, married, European, Christians and in their late 30s to mid-50s.

In 1999, the European Community issued a directive to combat discrimination based on sex, race, ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation with the intention that it should be passed into national legislation December 2003. While only three countries have made the directive law, we look at how legal obligations for businesses are increasing and garner the opinions of leading companies as to what this will mean for their businesses.

The need to balance the call for increased diversity against the needs of businesses to remain efficient and viable are also examined in the light of concern about over diversity becoming a compliance issue.
