Why board service is still attractive

Board director service takes more time and carries more risk than in the past, and directors frequently express concern that they seem to spend more time than before on compliance issues and less on strategic concerns. Nevertheless, the right board opportunities continue to be appealing for the majority of the 350 directors we surveyed recently about the issue. Our survey asked about directors’ motivations for accepting or declining board invitations, their reasons for stepping off a board in the past two years and the due diligence they conduct as they evaluate a board invitation. The article highlights the findings from the survey and looks at the implications for boards seeking to recruit new members.
