Technology and Communications UK Board Index 2005/2006

Our inaugural Technology and Communications UK Board Index provides information for leaders of technology and communications companies committed to the development of effective boards. Facts and figures collected over a three-year period prior to this edition provide a perspective on developments and indicate significant trends.

This Index covers the top 50 listed companies in these sectors and highlights the changing composition and activities of leading UK technology and communications company boards.

Trends revealed in the 2005/2006 UK Technology and Communications Board Index include:

  • Boards in the sector are getting smaller
  • More companies have combined the roles of chairman and CEO (although most say they are planning to separate the roles in the future)
  • The average length of service for chairmen and CEOs is increasing
  • The proportion of board directors who were non-executives rose above 50% for the first time in 2004
  • The proportion of women on technology and communications company boards is significantly lower than in the broader FTSE 150 18% of CEOs sat on external boards in 2004, compared with 48% in 2003
