Cornerstone of the Board: Director Education — evolving to meet boards’ needs

Julie Hembrock Daum, Julie Cohen Norris
October 2006

Director education is required by governance regulations, yet boards of directors have little guidance to follow regarding how directors should receive education — either in terms of topics covered, frequency or accreditation.

This issue of Cornerstone of the Board, Spencer Stuart’s series of articles focusing on the governance committee, examines the evolution of director education and shares findings from a survey of S&P 500 companies about their director education practices. The issue also offers guidance for boards considering which education program or combination of programs will best serve their needs.
