Life Sciences Monitor: Issue 1, 2007

Joseph Boccuzi, Susan Boren and John Mitchell
January 2007

In this issue of Life Sciences Monitor, Joe Boccuzi and John Mitchell explore how pharmaceutical companies have responded to the heightened expectations they face from investors and the public. With commentary from several leading executives, the article looks at what pharmaceutical companies are doing differently now than in the past. It describes how they are further encouraging ethical behavior and the challenges associated with assessing executives’ character and integrity.

A second article looks at the role of the CEO in board succession planning. While the new rigor boards have adopted in director recruitment has served to make boards more independent, directors should be careful not to exclude the CEO from the process. Susan Boren discusses the appropriate role for the CEO in director recruitment.
