CMO Summit 2005: Marketing or general management — which route to take?

Tom Scanlan
September 2005

A Spencer Stuart survey of 500 marketing executives across industries found that 70% of respondents have long-term aspirations of becoming a general manager or chief executive officer; only 30% want to be a chief marketing officer.

We gathered four past and present marketing executives for our annual CMO Summit, Marketing of general management — which route to take?, to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with various career paths for marketing professionals.

This year’s panelists included: Gary Briggs, vice president of marketing for PayPal; Beth Comstock, corporate vice president and CMO of General Electric; Jan Murley, CEO of The Boyds Collection; and Ian Rowden, executive vice president and CMO of Wendy’s International.
