The 2007 UK Board Index examines corporate governance, board composition and director remuneration among 150 of the largest companies by market value at the end of May 2007, excluding Investment Trusts.

Major trends in this year’s Board Index include:

  • Average remuneration for chairmen has fallen but 37.3 per cent now fall into the £250,000 to £499,999 bracket — up ten per cent on last year
  • Almost 99 per cent of companies now pay more than £30,000 as the basic non-executive fee
  • Average basic non-executive fee is £47,500, up by three per cent
  • 72.6 per cent of companies have at least one woman non-executive
  • 50 per cent of companies hold eight scheduled board meetings or fewer
  • Almost three quarters of companies carry out board evaluations internally
